GT5 Thoughts ???
« on: November 27, 2010, 12:18:05 AM »
My honest first opinion is ..... dissapointment  :sad1

I mean seriously they have been working on this for years and that is the best they can put out !!  Below are my main complaints

- game play seems so dumbed down for the masses.  Seems twice as arcadey then GT4.

- No option to make it harder to play.

- Leveling up so quick and earn way to much money for each race.  Means after about 30 minutes of game play i can already purchase a pretty damn fast car.  I like the fact with the older version you had to spend a bit of time with the crappy slow cars because that was all you could afford.  You actually had to work hard to buy the good cars.  Gave the game longevity!

- i have already unlocked 4 special events within the first 30 minutes.  These really should have been spaced apart and actually earned!  eg. finished first in a hard event or something like that.  Not giving me a special event for winning a shitty beginner race  :grr

- No damage physics means i can smash my way through the field with no reprecussions.  In this day and age i thought this was was now a stock standard feature to any racing game.  With high damage i am forced to drive properly and protect my car, without it i can drive like a drunken lunatic, knock every car off the road, run into every wall and still finish without a scratch!

- Mega slow loading of tracks  :unsureabout

- My biggest complaint .... i hate B spec and will always hate B spec.  Can anything else be more boring than this game mode   :thumbsdown3  They should have ditched this shit and fixed up the rest of the game.

that what i was expecting, and similar reviews everywhere. eyecandy is awesome but the rest suks. menus, loading screens, damage, racing physics etc etc. thats why they didnt release it on other platforms, they new it was only 1/2 a game.

My thoughts:

I actually like the menu screens. I've seen comments that people don't like them and I can't really work out why....

Damage or lack there of. Yes this is a massive letdown.... You should be able to tear the wheels off these things and a head on should be certain race over (with perhaps some money required for repairs etc). Rubbing is okay as they're not open wheelers so even light to medium rubbing/bumping should result in some panel damage with bigger bumps meaning bent steering etc. I have read however that they are still working on the damage and will patch an improvement in at a later date (hopefully not in 5yrs).

B-Spec Mode - I didn't have GT4 so I had never tried this in the past and am yet to in GT5. I'm a racer and can't see myself sitting by watching the action when I could be in the cockpit. However I see that this could appeal to people who like games such as "Football Manager" etc. The replay's after all are pretty awesome (with Premium cars that is).

I think they are making money easier to earn due to the volume and cost of some of the cars.... I mean there are $20M cars. I would prefer not to have to play 8 hrs a day for a year to be able to afford one of them. At least we'll be able to buy/try more of the premium cars over time.
-----  BUT - this has to be counteracted with limitations on what cars you are allowed to enter the lower entry races with (e.g. power, weight, drivetrain, age etc). Now I hope and am expecting that is the case as I have only done the one 3 race event in A-Spec, which had no limitations, so I took my DLC Lamborghini Murciélago LP 640 Chrome Line Edition out for a spin against Dihatsu's. That better not be possible throughout the game and we're forced to buy/tune older cars to clear events.

- Mega slow loading of tracks  :unsureabout

I'm yet to experience this. Loading times have been okay for me. I did the looooooong install before playing (man that was torture) but also I've only really been doing the 1st 4 License tests (trying for golds, got b & a all gold but might have to settle for silvers for ic & ib for now) and some of the special events so I might be headed for disappointment when I get to loading a 16 car grid.

I do like the go-karts but was not happy how easy it was to clear the intermediate event.

Am yet to sample the online aspect as I still have this stupid NAT3 connection issue to resolve but hopefully that adds another level to the game.

Overall it's not as polished as the hype made it out to be, but I'm comforted slightly that the producer says that it is a living thing that will evolve so hopefully they fix the damage, improve the engine sounds and at least give us some sort of generic cockpit view for the standard cars.

The jury is still deliberating...... Will get back to you when they have reached a verdict..... (so used to driving open wheelers from my rFactor days). I have used it for about 8 hrs but little actual laps at this stage but they're not terrible physics. I was expecting them to be more like the GT Academy Time Trial DLC physics though which I thought were really good, hard, but good.

One thing though, the physics on the Lotus Elise on the Top Gear Track Special Event are very poor. That thing is really unbalanced and feels like you're driving on dirt.

Look, if you own a PS3 you should probably get the game. GT is PlayStation..... But if you don't have one and were considering getting one for the game, I won't talk you out of it but perhaps wait until they improve some of the weak points.

There was a patch yesterday, i have noticed there is some sort of damage model added, very mild damage...but damage. Also if you set penalties to strong there will be very little ramming around corners, your car drops to a penalty speed for 3-10 secs depending on the force of your hit

sounds like they nicked it from another game of theirs, cant remember the title, but remeber the annoying slowdown.

The same thing was in GT5 Prologue.
Downloading the new patch now. Takes forever to dowload 133mb. Feels like dial up. :-(

actually i turned my net on the other night and it did give me the options to save the tracks to the harddrive to save on load times.  Only problem was that it wanted to download 8 gigs onto my harddrive which only has 11 gb remaining  :unsureabout  So will have to settle for the slow download times.  I give them at least credit for adding this feature in as it will help probably 90 % of players out there.

Hoges mate, less than $80 will get you a 500Gb 2.5" SATA II. Simple 2min hardware upgrade (but allow a few hours for backing up to an external drive and reloading onto new. Unless of course you have a bigger HDD and have just filled it????

nope only have an external harddrive that will only allow files of 4gb or less.  Which now rules out everything im recording in HD because they are too big to transfer across and i dont have enough room on the PS HD  :sad1

So it looks like your idea could be a winner for me.  Might have a look at it after xmas  :awe

PS3 will only read FAT32 formatted external drives. If you've recorded TV episodes through Play TV, I think these files are saved in pieces that the system reads/pieces together to read, so I think that you will still be able to back up anything currently on your PS3's internal HDD, to an external FAT32 formatted HDD, replace the internal drive with e.g 500gb, then restore files from back-up.
